God’s Omniscience

1. 139:1 Search. chaqar.

a. “search out, discover, probe, sound out, examine, test, i.e., try to find out
information about an object or event”
b. Judges 18:2. “Spy out the land”
c. Job 13:9 “Could you stand if God examined you?”
d. Proverbs 5:21 (NIV) For a man’s ways are in full view of the LORD, and he
examines all his paths.
e. Pr 25:2 “To search out a matter is the glory of Kings.” Solomon had the rare privilege to exhaustively investigate a matter.”
f. The Psalmist invites God to do this!
i. Ps 139:23

ii. Jeremiah 17:10 (NIV) “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man

according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.”

iii. 2 Chronicles 16:9 (NIV) “For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the

earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”
2. 139:1. Known me. It is one thing to say “God knows all things.” David says “you
have known me”.
a. My ROUTINES. (Sit and rise). Cf. De 6:7
b. My THOUGHTS. From afar is reference not to SPACE (distance) but to TIME.
“You know the thoughts I thought long ago!”
c. My ACTIONS. (139:3)
d. You know my words even before I say them!

i. ABOVE ME Ps 91:4 “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge;
ii. BENEATH ME. De 33:27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
iii. BEFORE ME. Isa 52:12 “for the LORD will go before you, the God of

Israel will be your rear guard.

iv. BEHIND ME. Isa 30:21 “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
v. RIGHT HAND. Psalm 16:8 “I have set the LORD always before me.

Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

vi. AROUND ME. Psalm 34:7 “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” Psalm 125:2 (NIV) As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.

vii. IN ME. Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.”
