Psalm 126
A Psalm for Soul Winners
A Pilgrim Psalm remembering the return from captivity.
We relate the principle of sowing and reaping to winning souls.
I. Interpretation. What it meant when written.
A. 126:1-3. The returning captives were filled with joy.
B. 126:4. A Prayer for complete restoration. C. 126:5-7. Confidence in God’s blessing.
1. Spiritual principle of obedience and reward. a. Deut. 28:1-6
b. 2 Chron 7:14
2. Spiritual principle of God’s faithfulness.
a. Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.
II. Application. How can these truths be applied to my life.
A. Restoration. V. 4 “restore our fortunes”
1. We were captives to sin.
a. Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
b. Heb 2:15. We were “all our lives held in slavery by their fear of death.”
2. God has restored us and called us to a ministry of reconciliation. B. Confidence in God’s Blessing.
1. His Word will not return empty. Isa 55:10-11 “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
2. Jesus taught lessons about fruitfulness. a. Parable of the sower. Matt 13
b. Parable of the wheat and the tares. Matt 13
c. Parable of the mustard seed. Matt 13 d. Parable of the growing see. Mark 4
e. The Vine and the branches. John 15
f. The promise of a fruitful earth reminds us of God’s promise to
bless the proclamation of His Word
3. God promises to bless the preaching of His Word.
a. Galatians 6:9 (NIV) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
b. 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV) Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
